6 Simple Steps for Reducing Exam Stress and for your personal wellbeing at this time.
-
Breathe! Sound obvious doesn’t it but when we feel stressed with breathe quicker from the top part of the chest and this can lead to feeling panicky. Breathe deeply and slowing, concentrating on the in-breath as the tummy expands and the out as it contracts. In through your nose and out through your mouth. Whilst giving this your full attention for at least 2 minutes, all your thoughts will be focused on this, inducing calm.
-
Change the voice! Positive self talk, that little voice inside often tells you that you are not good enough. To put it simply; how you think affects how you feel, which determines how you behave, which in turn will produce the results you get. Remember, the mind does not know the difference between real and pretend. So use positive suggestions, tell yourself that you are a winner and can do this; and you will notice the difference. You will not be at your best if you believe that you are a failure.
-
When preparing, take small chunks. Looking at a subject as a whole can be overwhelming, break it down into manageable amounts. That also includes the time you spend on it. When you feel that you have got to saturation point, Stop! Take a break.
-
Visualisation sounds a bit ‘La La’ but it works. If you feel stressed or anxious at the thought of the exam, regularly imagine yourself entering the examination room feeling clam and relaxed. See yourself at the desk looking confident, without a worry. Play out the scenario in your mind as a positive reinforcement.
-
Avoid the hype. Sometimes other people project their own fears and negativity on everyone else. It is often unintentional, but when absorbing this unconsciously it can bring you down and rock your own beliefs. Just be aware of who you are, and make a mental note that it is their ‘Stuff’ not your own.

I think it would be obvious to say look after yourself; make sure you are eating a well balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting lots of sleep, but it is also imperative that you have down time. Studying is important but leave some time for yourself. Go out and have some fun. This will clear your head and re energise you.
